Over 20 million people suffer some form of thyroid disease…that is a staggering statistic and something that I do not want to be apart of! I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was only 13 years old and I was prescribed synthroid to “treat” the condition. That was until last year when I decided enough was enough. I was tired of feeling OK but not great. I was tired of having brain fog, lack of energy, digestive issues, and the inability to loose weight. I knew there had to be a way to slowly heal my thyroid naturally and I was determined to do so! I know at least 4 people that take synthroid for thyroid issues and all it does is put a bandaid on the symptoms without actually treating the root cause of disease. As you can tell I’m very passionate about this and I’ve put all my effort into research, strategies, and supplements to get this bad boy under control.
Two years ago I came across a fitness and health coach, Erin Mullins Sanderson, she seriously has been my saving grace. She has completely healed her thyroid naturally and is now helping others do the same. I had done so much research at this point and I knew she had educated herself and been mentored by the best in the business so it was easy to trust her, it felt like a natural fit! So I started following her simple protocols in 2016 and in the same year I asked my doctor to switch me from synthroid to WP thyroid, which is a more natural thyroid medication. My goal is to come off medication completely but since then I have slowly reduced the amount of medication I take and I only take it every other day…that is a huge win in my book! It’s impossible for me to tell you every single thing I do and have done to get to this point, so I’m going to start with the first three steps I took on my journey. Before I move on if you don’t follow Erin AKA Fit Rocker Chick, do it!
The very first thing I did was make a choice. I made a choice mentally to commit to the process, to stick to what I know and what I’ve learned, and to make an investment in my health. If you’re not mentally committed it’s not going to work. My biggest motivating factor was knowing that if and when I have babies I want to be the healthiest mom I can be. Not only for myself but so that I can pass on my knowledge, eating habits, and holistic changes on to my littles. Most of all I wanted this for ME. It’s OK to be selfish, especially when your health depends on it! Once I was there mentally it all kind of just feel into place. Not saying everything I’ve done has been easy, but keeping my focus on my health has been a huge motivating factor!
Now you’re probably not going to like what I’m going to tell you next, but trust me it’s necessary! I went completely gluten free! No occasional gluten treats and no gluten free when it’s convenient…100% gluten free at all times! It’s easier than it sounds and there are so many options to make your favorite recipes without gluten! It’s been a full year gluten free and that change alone has been my biggest positive change in my overall health. Why gluten free? Let me tell you as short and simple as I can. Gluten is a natural inflammatory, yes it makes things inflamed. Doesn’t sound very good am I right? It can cause many autoimmune diseases (hence hypothyroidism) and so many more! Check out this article for the negative effects of gluten on your health!
I also gave up soy and that was harder than it sounds because soy hides in everything! Now it’s almost impossible to avoid soy when you eat out but I always order the best I can. We only eat out about once a week so if it sneaks in there it’s not going to kill me, but I avoid it like the plague at home. In people with thyroid disease, it creates havoc on your adrenal glands, causes hormonal imbalance, and even tricks your body into thinking your thyroid is a foreign pathogen. So your body will try to destroy your thyroid and that will not only effect your thyroid but your body as a whole! Just to give you hope after only 6 weeks of being gluten free all my thyroid levels were completely stable and normal! This is when I switched over to the WP thyroid because my body was starting to work again! Can I get an AMEN! I will warn you right now that friends, family, and people you don’t even know will get annoyed or make fun of your gluten free lifestyle. It kind of comes with the territory, but do what’s best for you! Your health is so much more important than a few snide remarks or comments! Please let me advise that if you do gluten free the wrong way by eating a ton of gluten free snacks, baked goods, or pre packaged meals you will gain weight and it will not help to heal your body. While those things are OK in moderation, it’s important to eat whole foods! Think organic/non-gmo fruits, veggies, pasture raised eggs, organic animal protein, coconut milk…you get the point. Look at the ingredients! Read EVERY SINGLE LABEL. Even foods that say gluten free have some questionable ingredients!
My final step for today is going to sound crazy but I stopped working out! Say what?! Yes I stopped doing my normal workout routine which involved super intense and long workouts that were doing my body no good! I instead began walking more and incorporating yoga until my body was able to handle workouts again. (It was 3 months before I started doing short weight lifting work outs again) Exercise is a stressor so if you stress your body long enough it will eventually stop responding, cause your adrenals to go into over drive, and makes your body release excess amounts of cortisol….a fat storing hormone! Even now I walk everyday, do pilates or yoga, and only weight lift 2-3x’s per week. My workouts aren’t more than 25 minutes long when I weight lift and that includes warm up and cool down. I keep my workouts intense during weight training so it’s not ideal to do every day! I can honestly say I look better, have more definition, and weigh less than I did on my wedding day. It’s amazing what eating a whole foods nutrient rich diet and taking care of your body will do for you!
